Dr. Marijke C.Ph. Slieker-ten Hove was a pelvic physiotherapist until her retirement and combined her work at her clinic, ProFundum Instituut, with the Pelvic Floor Center at ErasmusMC and teaching. Marijke is married to Jos, and together they have three daughters, three sons-in-law, and 6 grandchildren.

Career

In the Netherlands, she established two Master’s programs for pelvic physiotherapists. Within the International Continence Society, she served on the education committee for 16 years, organized round tables for physiotherapists, and was instrumental in establishing a physiotherapy committee to strengthen the position of the pelvic physiotherapist within the organization. Physiotherapy within ICS is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year (2026).

ProFundum

She founded the ProFundum Instituut, where patients with pelvic floor complaints sought accessible help for examination and treatment.

In her ProFundum Academy, she has been active in organizing and teaching, and she is currently still active within the Dutch Paramedical Institute focusing on the themes: ’the role of the pelvic floor in geriatric patients’ and ’the consequences for the musculoskeletal system following sexual trauma'.

Publications

She is the author of the book ‘Verborgen Vrouwenleed’ (aimed at patients and the possibilities of self-care) and obtained her PhD in 2009 from the Department of Gynecology at Erasmus University on ‘Pelvic floor function and dysfunction in a general population in women aged 45-85’.

Recognition

In 2020, she was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau in recognition of her (inter)national contribution to pelvic floor care.

Now

Although she concluded her patient care in 2021, she remains active in education and gives lectures in the Netherlands, Brazil, Poland, and Romania.

After her retirement, she is now working as a deacon in the PKN in Dordrecht and has resumed her main creative hobby, painting. She paints portraits with oil paint very occasionally, but most of her attention is devoted to intuitive abstract painting.
